Scholastic Storybook Treasures DVD Review: Giving Thanks...And More Stories To Celebrate American Heritage

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, what better way to teach your child about the true meaning of Thanksgiving than through Scholastic's Storybook Treasures DVD: Giving Thanks... And More Stories To Celebrate American Heritage (available Nov. 22, 2011).

This educational DVD has 4 short stories that help your child learn all about Native Americans and the creation of the first Thanksgiving.  This 70 minute disc is perfect for in the classroom use, or at home to help your child learn that Thanksgiving is not just about good food, football, and family (which seemed to be what my kids thought as they kept asking "is this real, Mom?" during the movie).

Here is what you get on the DVD Giving Thanks:
  • Giving Thanks: A great tale of the Mohawk's traditional Thanksgiving ceremony in which they honor and thank Mother Earth.  The story is read in the native language, with English translations.
  • Hiawatha:  The history behind the creation of Longfellow's poetic story of Hiawatha.
  • The Pilgrims of Plimoth: The retelling of the Pilgrims voyage to Plimoth and how they began to call it home.
  • Lincoln And Douglass: An American Friendship:  This story is narrated by Danny Glover, and talks about the "unusual, historic friendship between two great American leaders."
Giving Thanks...And More Stories To Celebrate American Heritage is a great way to share with your kids (or students) about the creation of Thanksgiving and the importance this "holiday" has in American society.
