The bonus DVD was more of a hit in our house than the CD because what kid does not like to watch other kids playing and having fun? It was neat to see the lyrics of Gill's music come to life as children act out Truck Stop and Foot Notes. I found that when I listened to the CD first, I did not have a clear understanding of what Gill was trying to accomplish; however, once we watched the kids doing the movements on the DVD, the CD took on a whole new life.
One of my favorite things about the CD is the song The Onomatopoeia Pizzeria. As a former Reading Specialist, I love to teach my kids new words, and just a few months ago I had taught them the meaning of Onomatopoeia! No seriously! Now they love to say the word and point out other words that fit its meaning (Onomatopoeia are words that express sounds...such as plop). This is by far their favorite word now...I think it has something to do with the fact that it says "pee" in it (oh, the preschooler's mind). The Onomatopoeia Pizzeria song alone is worth buying this disc! The "crust goes crunch, the sauce goes plop" we just ate it up.
Jim Gill's Music Play For Folks Of All Stripes CD/DVD combo is a great album to encourage your little one to get up and go! I liked the unique mix of different instrumental styles, and the overall laid-back vibe of the songs. Make sure you watch the DVD first so that you know what to do with the CD.
