Mum-Mums...Great First Finger Food

Mr. F has always had a strong gag reflex, and took a long time to want to start baby food (around 7.5 months).  After awhile of eating baby food, he seemed to become frustrated and wanted to feed himself.  I started him on super-dissolvable puffs and he gagged right away.  I waited another week then tried again. Gag! Ugh. So I waited one more week, then he was fine.  He was suddenly addicted to puffs and only wanted those and not baby food, but I made him eat both.  I decided one day that I would try something else so I bought some Earth's Best teething biscuits. BIG MISTAKE! Those things are the worst chocking hazards ever. They should be banned! As he sucked on them and tried to mash it up, it broke into very small pieces that were very hard and had to be fished out of his mouth.  I gave up, but after a week I knew I need to try something else.  That's when I found Organic Mum-Mums by Hot-Kid.  Such a very odd name, but I liked that they were rice cakes that had very few ingredients, were organic, and said they dissolved very easily.

We tried them, and were hooked! They are very large and thin and easy for Mr. F to hold on to.  The best description is that they are just like a giant puff.  According to the Mum-Mum website, they are "made with premium Japonica rice and other simple, all natural ingredients. It is also gluten-free, egg-free and peanut-free, with no artificial additives and preservatives."

They come wrapped with 2 in one pack so they are very easy to travel with.  They do make somewhat of a mess since they dissolve so easily; however, I found that Mr. F ate them so fast anyway there wasn't much to clean up unless he lovingly dropped some for the dog.

I highly recommend this product (especially the organic ones which are harder to find) for those of you who have picky eaters or ones with strong gag reflexes.

  1. Izzy still loves them at 18 months as a lite treat. So far she loves all the flavors except strawberry. Although the newest packages I picked up the shape has changed to circles instead of the surfboard shape. Personally I thought the surfboard shape was easier for little hands to hold and little mouths to get around then the new shape. Have you tried the yogurt drops? Those were our go-to when she just started solids and didn't like anything else.

  2. MamaTales,
I have tried yogurt drops by other companies with my older kids and they kind of liked them. I just thought they were a little too expensive for how few were in a box. Plus it was so hard to find organic snacks then.
I tried the strawberry mum-mums today-NOT a hit at all! My 3-year old spit it out in the sink!
Thanks for you comment! Keep them coming.

  3. VONS. That's where I bought the organic ones. Zoe loves them too. she can be making a fuss in the back seat, and I hand her one of those & I'm good to go for a while. I wouldn't have made it through our last road trip without them.

  4. Sam,
I buy them at Target usually. Let me know what the price is at Vons so I can compare them! Babies R Us was MUCH higher in price than Target.
